Alternative Products

This is by no means a comprehensive list it's just meant to give you some examples and get you thinking about alternatives that could be reasonably substituted for everyday products that you use.

Safety Razors

You know, the old fashioned kind that you buy the razor blades for. This is a great one for saving money, storage space, plastic and packaging. The reusable handle of the safety razor saves the plastic used in all of those disposables. The packs of replacement razor blades not only cost less but also have minimal packaging. They also take up hardly any storage space which for most of us is of considerable importance!

Mineral Salt Deodorant Sticks

These are relatively new (at least to me). They are apparently free from harmful ingredients and last a really long time (I've heard of people using the same one for over 6 months and still going strong), thus saving on packaging as well as you won't go through so many.

Nappies or Diapers

This one is harder I think. There are now diaper services that launder your dirty diapers and return clean ones to you. The cost of this service is supposed to be comparable with the cost of disposables, you would have to check in your area if this is available. Cloth diapers are made from cotton which should decompose in 1-6 months. Disposables take up to 500 years.

Low Wattage Light Bulbs

Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL) are four times more efficient and last up to 10 times longer than incandescent. A 13 watt CFL is the equivalent of a 60 watt incandescent. They can last up to 8 times as long as a normal light bulb. They may cost a bit more when you buy them but they consume much less and last much longer so they are a great way to save money.
